As per the Department of Employment and Labour, the national minimum wage for packing staff is R30.68 per hour effective 1 March 2026. This equates to R5,982.60 per month for a standard 195-hour month. Overtime must be paid at 1.5 times the normal rate for hours exceeding 45 per week.

Under the Wholesale and Retail Sector bargaining agreement administered by the Department of Employment and Labour, entry-level packing staff earn between R6,500 and R8,200 per month as of 2026. Experienced packers with 2 years can reach R9,500 monthly. These rates apply in addition to the national minimum wage where higher.

Foreign nationals from SADC countries require a General Work Visa from the Department of Home Affairs for packing staff roles, as they are not on the Critical Skills List. You need a confirmed job offer advertised for 30 days on the ESSA database first. The visa is valid for up to 5 years with annual renewals costing R1,520.

No formal qualifications are required for entry-level packing staff per the Basic Conditions of Employment Act via the Department of Employment and Labour; Grade 10 or equivalent is sufficient. Employers prefer 6 months warehouse experience for safety compliance. All must complete free induction training on health and safety.
