The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment sets the adult minimum wage at NZ$24.50 per hour from 1 April 2026 for all restaurant roles including waitstaff and kitchen hands. This rate applies to workers aged 16 and over with no separate youth minimum wage in 2026. Employers must pay at least time-and-a-half for hours worked beyond 40 in a week.

Immigration New Zealand requires an Accredited Employer Work Visa for restaurant positions unless you hold a working holiday visa or are a New Zealand or Australian citizen. The visa is valid for up to three years and needs a job offer from an accredited employer with a minimum of 30 hours per week. Applications must be lodged online with a valid job offer letter and passport.

No formal education certificate is mandated by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for entry-level restaurant roles such as kitchen hand or waiter. Employers typically require at least six months of prior hospitality experience demonstrated through references. Food safety training such as a current NZQA unit standard 167 or equivalent must be completed within the first month of employment.

Applicants must provide a current CV, two written references, proof of identity such as a passport, and a completed IR330 tax declaration form to the employer. If on a visa, a copy of the work visa and passport must be submitted before the first shift. All documents are submitted directly via the employer's online portal or email.
