This rate applies to workers aged 16 and over with no separate youth minimum wage in 2026. Employers must pay at least time-and-a-half for hours worked beyond 40 in a week.

Immigration New Zealand requires an Accredited Employer Work Visa for restaurant positions unless you hold a working holiday visa or are a New Zealand or Australian citizen. The visa is valid for up to three years and needs a job offer from an accredited employer with a minimum of 30 hours per week. Applications must be lodged online with a valid job offer letter and passport.
Q What experience or qualifications are required for restaurant jobs in New Zealand?
No formal education certificate is mandated by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment for entry-level restaurant roles such as kitchen hand or waiter.
