As per the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the minimum wage for security guards in New Zealand is NZ$24.80 per hour as of 1 April 2026. Security guards receive time-and-a-half for all hours worked over 40 per week under the Security Officers Award. Night shift allowances must total at least NZ$3.50 per hour.

As per Immigration New Zealand, overseas applicants require an Accredited Employer Work Visa with a job offer for at least 30 hours per week. The visa costs NZ$490 for applications lodged after 1 July 2025 and lasts up to three years. Applicants must hold a valid Certificate of Approval from New Zealand Police before starting work.

No prior experience is mandatory but a current Certificate of Approval issued by New Zealand Police is compulsory. The certificate requires a clean criminal record check completed within the last 12 months.

Overseas applicants additionally submit a police certificate from their home country dated within six months. All documents must be uploaded via the Immigration Online portal for visa holders.
