Cleaning staff must receive at least this rate for every hour worked with no lower rate permitted for part-time or casual contracts. Employers must pay the rate automatically without needing employee requests.
Q What are the maximum weekly hours and annual leave entitlements for cleaning staff in the United Kingdom in 2026?
As per the UK Government, cleaning staff are limited to an average of 48 hours per week over a 17-week reference period under the Working Time Regulations. Workers receive 5.6 weeks of paid annual leave each year, equating to 28 days for a standard 5-day week. Night cleaning shifts require 11 consecutive hours of rest between duties.

As per HM Revenue and Customs, cleaning staff pay no Income Tax on earnings up to the £12,570 personal allowance in 2026/27. The basic rate of 20% applies on income from £12,571 to £50,270 with Class 1 National Insurance at 8% above £12,570. Employers deduct via PAYE and submit monthly RTI reports.
