Man, welder jobs in Australia are booming right now
From what I've seen, blokes (and sheilas) with solid welding skills are packing up and heading down under. Not gonna lie, the pay's nuts compared to back home. Thing is, it's not just about the money β lifestyle's pretty sweet too.
Mining towns. Oil rigs. Construction sites everywhere.
Where the real action is
Look, Perth's a hotspot. FIFO β fly in fly home β roles from there shoot you out to the Pilbara. Massive iron ore mines need welders non-stop. Repairs, new builds, you name it.
And don't sleep on Queensland. LNG projects up north, like Curtis Island. Those gigs pay top dollar, often over $100k AUD a year. But here's the thing β they're intense. Long shifts, remote spots.
Sydney and Melbourne? More fab shops, shipyards. Steady work, less travel if that's your vibe.
What's the pay like, honestly?
Entry-level? You're looking at 70-90k. Experienced? Easily 120k-plus. Overtime? That's where it stacks up. In my experience, coded welders β TIG, MIG, stick β pull the big bucks.
Big difference.
Rates vary by state. WA's highest, naturally. But factor in camp life β free food, digs. Not bad.
Visa stuff if you're not Aussie
482 visa's your mate for skilled work. Need trade cert, maybe a skills assessment from TRA. I've known guys who got sponsored quick β mines are desperate.
Working holiday visa for under-35s? Test the waters first. But real jobs? Go sponsored.
- Get your quals recognized
- English test if needed
- Job offer seals it
Honestly speaking, it's easier than you think if you're qualified.
How to snag one
Seek.com.au. Indeed. Jora. That's where they post.
But network. LinkedIn groups for Aussie welders. Hit up recruitment agencies like Chandler Macleod β they handle FIFO stuff.
Resume tip: List your tickets upfront. AS/NZS 1554 cert? Gold. Boilermaker background? Even better.
Interviews? Often over Zoom. Then drug test, med check. Straightforward.
Living the dream (or nightmare?)
Rosters β 2/1, 3/1. Home time's good. But isolation hits some hard. Mosquitoes. Heat. 50C days.
Upside? Beaches nearby sometimes. Save a ton β no rent eating your wage.
From mates who've done it, worth it for a couple years. Stack cash, come home set.
Not for everyone though. You?
Skills that pay the bills
Stick welding's baseline. But hyperbaric? Subsea? That's rare skills, double pay.
Pipe welding in oil/gas β massive demand. Structural steel for bridges, buildings too.
Upgrade if you can. TAFE courses in Oz recognize overseas stuff often.
Real talk: Safety's huge. MSHA-type tickets transfer over-ish. Don't slack there.
Jobs ain't drying up. Resources boom's on. Construction rebounding post-COVID.
If you're handy with a torch, Australia's waiting. Jump on it.
